Plant Operator

HOURLY RATE: $12.350


This position is under the general supervision of the Chief Operator.  Position has responsibilities for reports and / or records or monitoring records of the Water Plant. Several decisions are made weekly requiring some interpretations and Judgment. Render simple public services several times a week.


  • The planning, organizing, and operation of the water plant.
  • Provide a good safe working environment.
  • Maintain good public relations.
  •  Ability to perform a wide variety of different types of tasks without the variety itself causing a loss of efficiency.
  • Works on an assigned rotating shift schedule.
  • Motivate personnel to achieve maximum efficiency to operations.
  • Overseeing the collection of samples, and process testing.
  • Observing variations in operating conditions.
  • Interpreting meter readings, and test results.
  • Make operational changes when needed.
  • Monitor water plant.
  • Maintain communication with immediate supervisor for total plant operation, personnel, and problem conditions.
  • Maintain administrative records.
  • Ability to repair pumps.
  • Prepare monthly operation reports.
  • Assists with training of new personnel.
  • Maintaining plant grounds, like: mowing the lawn when needed.
  • Will perform other related duties as required.


Lab equipment like titrates, turbid meter, pH meter, jar test agitator etc. Hand and powered tools, lawn mowers and weed eaters.


Position requires working on a rotating shift schedule, varying hours, overtime, weekends and holidays.  Exposure to hazards, which might result in serious injury or death, exposed to chlorine, ammonia, alum, sodium chlorite; may work under extreme outdoor conditions.  Position may require occasional travel. The physical demands are up to medium lifting up to 50 lb. significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, and carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, and reaching, handling, sitting, pushing, and pulling.  May work and/or walk for long periods of time on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain.  Position is subject to 24-hour emergency callbacks.


  • Requires a high school diploma or G.E.D. 
  • Must have T.C.E.Q. issued certification, Surface Water Production Class “C”.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license
  • Sufficient knowledge in a field to perform most normal work as assigned with little direction or supervision.
