Information Technology Specialist II (JO#17-024)

PAY RATE:    $14.363


This position’s role is to assist the Director of Information Technology in meeting the City’s IT needs. A majority of this person’s time will be spent responding to requests submitted via our online work order system. Provide troubleshooting services related to computer hardware and software used in the City. Will also be responsible for installations, implementations and deployment of various pieces of software across the LAN and WAN.  Maintain and conduct preventive maintenance on all printers and related peripherals.  Must be available at all times (some evenings and weekends) to provide technical support and staff support in an ever-growing environment.  Must possess thorough knowledge of the equipment and its capacity to perform technical and complex tasks. 


  • Maintains and troubleshoots problems associated with users’ workstations on the Local Area Network (LAN) environment and (WAN) Wide Level Network.
  • Interacts with all users at all levels and also occasional interaction with vendors for supplies and equipment on a daily basis, which requires tact, courtesy and diplomacy.
  • Configures and installs computer software, hardware and network equipment.
  • Maintains security of systems by running anti-virus software, security program software, securing equipment to its location, and by other appropriate means to insure the security and integrity.
  • Performs system back up after 5:00 pm to allow for users accessibility during normal working day and performs recovery of equipment and system failures.
  • Maintains the City’s Incode System and Public Safety Report Management System.
  • Analyzes and/or resolves hardware, software, and application problems for all network or stand-alone computer systems and network resources.
  • Monitors computer systems, networks, and applications for response time, problem prevention, performance and resource utilization.
  • Coordinates the resolution of network hardware, software and application problems between technical support and customer personnel.
  • Reports hardware failures to the appropriate vendors via telephone or on-line systems.
  • Analyzes problems, and designs technical solutions to specific user needs.
  • Lays and tests cable for computer networks and phone lines.
  • Works in various departments in the City and assist with computer problems.
  • Maintains all work orders and prepare a weekly report with the disposition and/or recommendations.
  • Maintains the City’s VoIP system (including assigning extensions, creating mailboxes, forwarding calls, and Conference Bridge) and mobile system.
  • Develops and monitors performance levels of software and hardware and evaluate, recommend, and participate in proposing alternative methods of information processing.
  • Provides reports in written and oral communication and provides presentations as needed.
  • Assists in system monitoring and fault management; software distribution and patch management.
  • Analyzes and/or resolves hardware, software, and application problems for all network or stand-alone computer systems and network resources.
  • Manages domain policies and security.
  • Resolves operating system problems.
  • Assists in implementing web based applications on Microsoft Windows 2003 servers.
  • Applies access control to files and folders on a 4 Terabyte file server using Active Directory users and groups and local groups.
  • Maintains Microsoft Windows 2003 and Microsoft Windows 2008 servers.
  • Manages hardware on Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 virtual machines including processors, memory, network adapters.
  • Managing naming standards and the application environment.
  • Performs deployment of emerging technologies, such as virtualization, thin client, etc.
  • Configures, maintains, and troubleshoots wireless access points (point to point, and point to multipoint).
  • Monitors backup jobs and ensure high level of completion success rate.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned. 


Computers and components, Dell servers, printers, plotters, terminals, facsimile, copy machines, scanners, multi-line telephone systems (NEC), digital video recording equipment, switches and hubs, data communication systems, routers, imaging systems, mobile data terminals, firewalls.  Media such as DVD/DVDRW, CDR/CDRW, disk drives, gigabit disk drives, tape drives and other assorted peripheral equipment.  Must be proficient, but not limited to common Microsoft applications such as Windows, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Cisco Firewall ASA 5510, Extreme Switches, Fortinet routers, Unitrends backup appliances, iBoss Web Filter.


Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned office with limited hazard to health or body; be exposed to some degree of physical exertion in order to manipulate objects weighing 30-50 pounds; with some possible lifting of equipment to exceed 50 lbs.  Will have some unusual working hours (evenings and weekends); may involve occasional travel. 


Requires an Associates in Information Technology/Networking related field with a minimum of three (3) years of experience.  Preferred Bachelors in Information Technology/Networking related field with a minimum of five (5) years of experience. Must have good communication, writing, organizational and time-management skills. Experience with many of the following: DHCP, DNS, VLAN, VPN, SQL, Active Directory, group policies, Batch scripting, Linux, Windows Server 2003/2008, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), VMWare VSphere, Content Management Systems (Joomla or Wordpress), Excel, Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Access, Postini spam filter, Google apps and email.
